A lesson of self-control.
"Control Yourself!", I yell at my daughter as she pulls back the dog's ear and excitedly screams into it. My 6-year-old is always full of energy and excitement and she really has a hard time controlling her tones. This isn't the first time today that I have had to tell this child to use her inside voice. In the midst of a hectic day, it drives me absolutely bananas! So as I'm yelling at her to control her loud voice I realize that I'm doing exactly what I'm telling her not to do. Looking at myself in the mirror, I came to the reality that... I lack self-control too. Especially under stress, I have a tough time managing my emotions. For a moment I tried to blame the pregnancy, and though it may factor into it a little, it does not excuse my own behavior. Anyway, as I pondered a solution to this problem I remembered the scripture in 2 Timothy that says that God gives us a spirit of power, love, and SELF CONTROL. Just because I'm the parent, doesn't make it okay for me to yell at my kids. An out of control parent is worse than an out of control child. I believe that the example we set for our kids is the most effective way to discipline them. God's word instructs us to be a good example so let's be what God intended for us to be! Examples of power, love, and self-control; not only in parenting but even and especially when nobody's watching. Stay blessed and unhindered!
